Going Home

Beth peacefully passed away at 6:00 this evening with Jim at her side. This is a poem from the devotion her sister, Dee, read to her this morning:

When our Captain bids us "Go,"
It is not ours to murmur "No."
He that gives the sword and shield,
Chooses too the battlefield
On which we are to fight the foe.

- Corrie ten Boom

Information about memorial services will be posted here as soon as the plans are finalized. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributing to the Beulah United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Radford University Foundation.

Jim, Matt, Peter and the rest of the Davis families. We are very saddened by the loss of Beth. We feel a special closeness to your family from Matt and Peter's friendship with Matthew. I've always felt that they were Matthew's brothers that he never had. One of our treasured memories will be inviting us to your home at Christmas time to get a better feel for the Davis family. Beth is a special person and will be missed by many families including the extended Beulah family and all of Chesterfield County for her contributions to the lives of thousands of students and their parents. You are in our prayers.
Finally, we're sure that Matthew and others from church and your family are giving Beth a VIP tour of her new heavenly surroundings right now. God Bless Your Family!!! Jerry & Jean Lane

It is with such heavy hearts that we all try to take in the fact that our dear friend is no longer here with us. Many years ago at Beulah Methodist Church, Rev. Jeff Looker taught a class on death and dying. I learned for the first time the concept that death was God's most perfect form of healing. As a nurse I have remembered that so many times and I do know that our girl is no longer in pain and is in the presence of God. Farewell, good and faithful servent. You will never leave our hearts or minds.

I am so sorry to hear of this sad news. I have, since early on, admired the faith, perserverance, and boldness of your family to believe God to answer prayer, and do good on your behalf. May He give you strength to continue in this faith, and rest in His comfort.
Continuing the prayers,
Joe and Lisa Racek, Los Angeles

As bad as we all want her back, we all have to understand that God obviously thought that she had completed her task. She was an amazing asset to us here at ARGS. It's extremely heartrending to lose someone who is almost like a mother to all of us here, but we can't be sad at the fact that she is not here with us anymore… she wouldn't want that. We need to celebrate the time that she was here. And be thankful for the differences she made in all of our lives. I’ll continue to keep your family in my prayers. She’s out of pain now. Just remember that.

I love you Mrs. Davis.

To the Davis family...words can not begin to express the sadness that we feel with the loss of Beth...as much as she meant to us, her work community, I can only imagine the void that is in the hearts of her family...may God bless each of you and hold you all tight within his arms...we will miss her smile but her presence will be forever felt in Chesterfield County...take care of each other.

I was so sad to hear of Mrs. Davis' passing this morning when I entered the Governor's School. Mrs. Davis was the first person to speak to me on a one-on-one basis at ARGS, and had much to do with my decision to attend the Governor's School. Certainly this should come as no surprise to anyone who knew Mrs. Davis: she never knew a stranger. Because of this trait, and others, Mrs. Davis was someone we came to connect with as a direct part of ARGS, and it is hard to imagine an ARGS without her presence.

But we must press on, as in all things, knowing that all that happens is God's Will.

I had planned to post here before now, but had been so occupied with preparing for exams and finishing the school year out, that I never got a chance to. This saddens me greatly, that perhaps I might have been able to communicate with Mrs. Davis one last time before now.

I would like to take this opportunity, however, to share a humorous story that one of the Governor's School history teachers shared with me and other students about Mrs. Davis this morning. I hope that Mr. Stoneking will forgive me for conveying this without his permission:

Mrs. Davis apparently was in charge of the scheduling of fire drills at the Governor's School. For a time, it seemed as if every time Mrs. Davis would commence a fire drill, Mr. Stoneking would be administering a test. They always kidded each other about how she had a knack for pulling the fire alarm just as his students were testing. It seemed to never fail.

To further the joke, Mrs. Davis would jest with Mr. Stoneking and contact him to check his test dates before she would schedule fire drills.

Ironically, Mrs. Davis passed away just before exams were supposed to commence today. Dr. Ruffa, the Director of the school, decided to cancel exams and classes. Mrs. Davis, therefore, managed to interrupt approximately six of Mr. Stoneking's (not just tests, but) exams in her passing.

We all will miss Mrs. Davis greatly, but, as Dr. Ruffa told us this morning, I am certain that Mrs. Davis would be the first to insist that we all press on with our affairs, even in her absence.

We all know that Mrs. Davis was strong in her faith. We know that she is in a better place. I look forward to the day when I can meet her again there.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who knew Mrs. Davis during this time of grievance.

I can't tell you how saddened I am for your loss. I know your mom is in heaven watching over all of us, as she always has. She is no longer in pain, and is dancing in a place we can hardly dream of. She will be missed by many. Your in my heart and prayers. May God Bless your family at this difficult time.

What an inspiration Beth was to us all. It was my pleasure to get to know her on the Radford University Board of Visitors, where she served with distinction. We remained e-mail friends after her term had expired, and until she entered the hospital.
I know that she will be missed by her family. She was so very proud of you!
God bless you all.

What a joy to have worked with Mrs. Davis for two years. In that time, as a substitute at the Governors School, she worked tirelessly to help others in education. She help guide me through the sea of subbing requirements, so I may reach a goal of teaching in a classroom. When she called, my schedule would change to accomodate her subbing needs at ARGS. We all can know how she had such an impact on everything and everyone around her. For that and so much more, she will be sorely missed. I am grateful to have known her.
My prayers are with her family at this time.

I send my deepest sympathy, and I also thank God for a woman who made such an immeasurable difference in the lives of students and educators through her work at ARGS. As an alum, I owe my success since graduation largely to her leadership and determination to better the school and accept nothing but the best from it's students. God bless.

Mrs. Davis helped me so much during my time at ARGS. When I got the call late last night about her passing I was shocked. I never even knew that she was sick! I remember during my junior year I saw her every single morning before class started. She stood at the doors of the bus loop and greeted everyone who got off the buses with a smile. She had a kind heart and did anything she could to help the students at ARGS. She contributed to the Governor's School's success tremendously and deeply touched the students, including myself, who looked up to her. I will deeply miss her but I know that she is at peace in heaven. I will keep Mrs. Davis and the rest of your family in my prayers. God Bless.
